Olot and the Garrotxa area in general are full of markets, fairs and other cultural activities throughout the year Some highlights are the St Luke Fair, The Fira de l’Embotit devoted to all kinds of sausage-making, The Fira de la Ratafia celebrating the wine of that name, and various mediaeval fairs and re-enactments. Amongst the cultural attractions of the area are an international Exposition of Nativity art and the Engraving Show. There is also a regular program of theatre and cinema, concerts and conferences.
The Discover the Garrotxa initiative organises guided visits, with local guides, throughout the year. HOSTAL OLOT is only a ten minute walk away from the Montsacopa volcano situated in the town itself, and the Montolivet volcano. The banks of the river Fluviŕ are close by, with the modern architecture of RCR. It is also close to the wetlands of Moixina I La Deu, a protected nature reserve.
HOSTAL OLOT is an ideal base from which to visit The famous Fageda d’en Jordŕ, a much-visited beech wood reamrkable for its spectacular colours; it is also convenient for the Visitor Centre of the Garrotxa Volcanoes Natura Park (mediambient.gencat.cat). The Vall dčn Bas is on the doorstep too, with its scenery, picturesque villages and renowned gastronomy, all of which amply reward the visitor. Further afield but still only a short distance away are the town perched atop a basalt outcrop, Castellfolit de la Roca, or the mediaeval historic monuments of Besalu, Santa Pau and St Joan les Fonts. To the north the Alta Garrotxa region is a protected nature area of great natural beauty www.altagarrotxa.org. For cyclists, the Hostal Olot is only 5 minutes from the cycleway linking Olot to Girona, which passes through areas such as the Pedra Tosca park ant towns such as St Feliu de Pallerols www.viesverdes.org.
